Was there ever an artist more innovative than Will Eisner?
This is everything you want from an Eisner drawing: forced perspective, hero in bondage, and the Spirit logo with Eisner’s signature.
Will kept a stack of (otherwise) blank paper sheets with just the printed Spirit logo and signature line on them, allowing him an easy layout to work out cover ideas. I don’t know if this drawing led to a published cover, title-page, or merchandised image (such as a postcard or print), but it’s classic Eisner of museum quality –and it has an air of familiarity. Anyone looking to piece together a collection of essential comic art needs an Eisner, and they are becoming increasingly more rare an expensive. It’s only a matter of time before something like this breaches the $20K+ bracket.
