Fancy Lala, The Magic Stage (Mahō no Sutēji Fanshī Rara) is a magical girl anime series produced by Studio Pierrot in 1988. The original character designs were created by manga artist and animator Akemi Takada, who worked on many of the 80’s Studio Pierrot series and helped to create Kimagure Orange Road and Creamy Mami, as well as frequently collaborating with Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Urusei Yatsura, Patlabor).
A 9-year-old elementary school girl, Miho Shinohara, dreams of one day drawing manga. A magical pen and sketchbook allow her to transform into a 15-year-old girl who she names Fancy Lala. This new alter ego is talent scouted and she gradually follows the path to stardom–unbeknownst to her parents or sister, in a sort of prototypical Hanna Montana scenario.
