SPIDER-GWEN: GHOST SPIDER by Veronica Fish

I always loved the cover to Batgirl #35, featuring our heroine stopping for a selfie in the girls’ lavatory while out nightclubbing. But when multiple, credible allegations began piling up against artist Cam Stewart for his alleged predatory behavior, it really broke my heart and I divested myself of all the Cam Stewart art in my collection. It is such a shame that one of the best runs on the character is indelibly connected to a person who may have used his position to prey on that fanbase.

Having already been a big fan of Veronica Fish‘s work, and having purchased a bit of her art, I decided to reach out and ask if this was a commission that she might want to do. I decided to swap Batgirl for Spider-Gwen and swap the background cast for Gwen’s bandmates in The MaryJanes as well as add Cindy Moon, unmasked but in Silk costume, entering in the background.

Andy Fish renders amazing lettering, so I asked them to make this a family jam piece and replace the stickers on the mirror in the original drawing with other, famous comicbook bands, like Josie and the Pussycats (tying back to Veronica’s Archie Comics roots), Sex Bob Omb (from Scott Pilgrim), and I asked Andy to give a shoutout to one of his and Veronica’s indie projects, so he opted for Blackwood. Veronica got caught up in the piece and decided to add color to give this piece the same eyeline as the original. Team Fish really knocked it out of the park.

This is strong contender for a variant cover if Marvel inquires.
