Shawn Kerri was one of the very few women to have illustrated for underground comics in the 1970s and 80s, but was absolutely the only female artist to ever be published by CarToons Magazine, which was the quintessential car culture humor magazine. Kerri was not extremely prolific, thought she did work for Disney while making her name in the Southern California Punk Rock scene illustrating flyers and designing logos. She is perhaps best known for creating the Circle Jerks “skanking punk” mascot.
This interior cover from CarToons Magazine was exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art‘s Retrosepctive Exhibition, CarToons: Art of America’s Car Culture from July 16, 2016 to January 2, 2017.
Shawn disappeared in the 1990s and different reports claim that she passed away in the late 90s, early 2000s, or as recently as just a few years ago, but her legacy as an important illustrator continues to grow as her work becomes more and more scarce.
