WOLVERINE IN SAVAGE LAND: by Chris Anderson

Chris Anderson was a recent guest on Comic Art Live Update 232 as part of Bill’s IC3 preview. He is author and illustrator of the creator-owned titles, Lost Angels and Chaotic Neutral, and his work has appeared in Heavy Metal Magazine. On his webpage and youtube channel he reviews and discusses story arcs from the classic Chris Claremont X-Men run, among other things. CCXCC is an abbreviation for Chris Claremont X-men Comic Club. This illustration is the cover tile for the episode covering X-Men issue 116 in which the Uncanny X-Men travel to the Savage Land. This 9 x 12 in. ink drawing of Wolverine and Zabu (Kazar’s sabre tooth sidekick) is a great piece of published fan art.

An intriguing aspect to art produced for youtube is how differently formatted it is from typical published comic book covers. In the world of podcasts and web video content, horizontal tiles are the ostensible “covers” and art produced for the medium are published as static images representing video content —not so dissimilar to movie posters, but differently configured.

While consistent with the look of X-men comics from the late 70s and early 80s, there is also an element of cartooning that should be familiar to fans of Frank Cho and zine culture.
